Yoga, massage and slowing down in Sayulita

Open-air shalas and a hot studio, massage a block from the beach, a sauna and cold plunge, a Friday-night temazcal and the retreats that fill the winter.

For a surf town, Sayulita takes its rest seriously. There are yoga classes most mornings under palm-thatched roofs, a heated studio, reformer Pilates, a sauna and cold plunge, and massage rooms on rooftops a block from the sand. Teachers come from all over to run retreats in the jungle above the coves.

Most of it is drop-in, and most of it is better booked a day ahead in high season. This guide covers where to practise, where to be looked after, the old Mesoamerican sweat lodge and how the retreat season works.

Yoga: the shalas and the hot room

The town's classic classes are on the north side, in open-air rooms where the breeze does the cooling. Hotelito Los Sueños runs public classes every day in its two studios, from slow flow and yin to vinyasa, a 90-minute class with chanting and a Friday-evening restorative, plus a donation-based community class twice a month. The Rose Room, on the roof above Hotel Don Bonito, has daily drop-in classes for every level, with mats to borrow, first come first served.

If you'd rather sweat, The Hot Box above Avenida Revolución teaches heated flow, hot Pilates, sculpt and the traditional 26-and-2 series; it takes a break in the low season and reopened on October 18 in 2026. On the south side, Sayulita Yoga Center is an air-conditioned indoor studio, open since 2017, teaching Iyengar, Jivamukti, hatha and flow, with its weekly schedule sent through a WhatsApp group.

As a guide to prices, a drop-in at Los Sueños was 250 pesos in cash in 2026, a week unlimited 1,000 and a month 2,600, a little more by card.

Pilates, sauna and the cold plunge

Alchemize House, on Calle Miramar, is the town's social wellness club: a sauna that seats fifteen, a cold plunge for six, a pool to lounge by and a programme of vinyasa, Pilates, breathwork and sound baths, with a desk to work from between rounds. A day pass was 700 pesos in 2026, and the schedule changes often, so check it the day you go.

For something more precise, Pilates Sayulita on the Punta de Mita road has six reformers, so classes never go above six people, taught in English, Spanish and French in an air-conditioned room. It's by reservation only.

Sweat, plunge, lie by the pool, repeat: the town's newest ritual fits between a surf and lunch.

Massage and the spas

You're rarely more than a few minutes' walk from a massage table. Nirvanna, the big spa on the second floor at Manuel Navarrete and Marlín, is open every day with English-speaking staff and also sends therapists to houses from Sayulita to La Cruz. 7 Spa, a block from the plaza and the beach, works in an open-air rooftop palapa and is known for its Mexican chocolate treatment.

For sore surf shoulders, a few practices go deeper. Sayulita Holistic Bodywork offers structural work, therapeutic massage and breathwork; a 60-minute massage was 1,600 pesos in 2026. Sayulita Sports Massage, on Calle Libertad, does deep-tissue and sports work and medical acupuncture, and will come to your rental. Mandala Massage, upstairs across from the plaza, also comes to you at home or on the beach.

Temazcal: the sweat lodge

A temazcal is a Mesoamerican steam bath: a low dome of earth, wood or cloth where stones heated in a fire are carried in and doused with water and herbs. A guide leads the group through rounds of heat, singing and quiet in near-total darkness, and it ends with a rinse in cool water. It's an old practice of healing and cleansing, and it's taken seriously, so go in with respect.

Near Sayulita, Casa Madera, a wellness house a short ride from the plaza, holds a temazcal on Friday evenings from about 7:30 to 10pm, for ages 15 and up. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and water, and eat lightly beforehand. The heat and steam are intense. If you're pregnant, have a heart or blood-pressure condition, asthma or claustrophobia, talk to your doctor first and tell the guide before you go in.

Retreats and the wellness season

Retreats cluster in the dry months, from November to April, when the jungle is green but the days are clear. Visiting teachers book whole houses in town or the retreat centres above the coves; a week of yoga twice a day with meals and lodging ran to about US$3,100 to 3,350 a person in 2026. Haramara, set on 12 acres of jungle above the Pacific, also sells day passes from 11am to 6pm, from US$50, or with lunch, a massage and a yoga class.

Sayulita is also a place people come to train. Paraíso Yoga runs 200-hour teacher trainings, and Evoka, the Sayulita Yoga School, runs 200-hour yoga and 100-hour meditation trainings through the year. In April, the Soleita Festival pairs four days of music with two days of yoga and sound baths at beach venues.
